Mannatech: Profile of a Social Entrepreneur Company

Os Hillman • Social Entrepreneurship
A social entrepreneur is a change agent combining the for-profit business and non-profit worlds to bring social change. A key to the ultimate success of social entrepreneurship is the creation of an innovative new technology for helping with an existing global problem. Mannatech is an example of such a company.

I first met Sam and Linda Caster , founders of Mannatech, a global nutrition company while doing a marketplace conference in Dallas. He was one of the speakers on the program with me. He shared his "Joseph" story and the story behind the founding of Mannatech. After the conference I spent a day visiting Sam in their global headquarters in Dallas. They operate in 20 countries and hold over 70 patents. I was impressed with Sam and Linda's Kingdom focus and their business expertise.

During my visit to their plant I learned that the lack of proper nutrition and food has become epidemic in both industrialized and developing countries, which means the supplementation of essential nutrients has become a critical strategy for protecting health.

Sam and Linda answered the call to help in the fight against global malnutrition, rather than the world hunger problem which often results in food that is given to hungry children lacking adequate nutrition in the food. They created a strategy to help address the core problem with a product that delivers a real answer.

Mannatech combines social entrepreneurship with a business enterprise, much like the Tom's shoes, i.,e, "buy one pair of shoes and we'll give another to a needy child." I was so impressed with their vision to impact children who suffer from malnutrition that I signed up as a partnering ministry to represent their product. [i]
